High purity potassium nitrate is an inorganic compound, colourless crystal at room temperature, soluble in water. It has the form of colourless transparent rhombohedral crystals or powder or granules. When heated to about 400°C, it will decompose to release oxygen and turn into potassium nitrite, and continue to be heated to decompose into potassium oxide and nitrogen oxide.

High-purity potassium nitrate has many industrial applications. It is an important raw material for the manufacture of black powder, mining powder, fuse, firecrackers, etc. It is also used in fireworks to produce purple sparks. In addition, in the ceramic industry, it is used in the manufacture of porcelain enamel colour medicine; in the glass industry, it is used as glass clarifier, also used in the manufacture of automobile lamp glass shell, optical glass tube glass shell and so on. In the pharmaceutical industry, high purity potassium nitrate is used in the production of penicillin. At the same time, high-purity potassium nitrate is also widely used in agriculture, mainly as a fertiliser, especially for vegetables, fruits, flowers and some chlorine-sensitive crops (e.g. potatoes, strawberries, beans, etc.). As a chlorine-free nitrogen and potassium compound fertiliser, its active ingredients nitrogen and potassium are rapidly absorbed by crops and leave no chemical residues.

It should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from fire and heat sources, and avoid co-storage and mixing with reducing agents, acids, flammable substances and metal powders. Because of its strong oxidising property, contact with organic matter may cause combustion and explosion.
