Industrial Grade Potassium Nitrate
INTRODUCTION
Industrial Grade Potassium Nitrate is an important inorganic compound, a colourless transparent rhombohedral or rhombic crystal or white powder, odourless, non-toxic, with a salty taste and cooling sensation. It is readily soluble in water and its solubility increases rapidly with increasing temperature. It is also soluble in liquid ammonia and glycerol, but insoluble in anhydrous ethanol and ether.
Industrial potassium nitrate has a wide range of uses, including in the manufacture of pyrotechnics, gunpowder, matches, pharmaceuticals, and the glass industry. Potassium nitrate is also an important raw material in the production of penicillin potassium salt, rifampicin and other pharmaceuticals. In agriculture, potassium nitrate is used as a colouring agent and preservative for meat products.
Dust or mist of potassium nitrate is irritating to the respiratory tract and inhalation at high concentrations may cause health problems. There is a risk of combustion and explosion when in contact with or mixed with organic substances, reducing agents and flammable substances such as sulphur and phosphorus. Therefore, strict adherence to safety practices and protective measures is required during storage, transport and use.
In summary, industrial-grade potassium nitrate plays an important role in a number of fields.
